First Impressions: “The Cord” by Joana Serrat

The tasty teaser track to Catalan auteur Joana Serrat’s forthcoming Big Wave album is sure to send some listeners spinning through time. Like her last solo album, Hardcore from the Heart, the tune is accented by a thick fog of reverb, distortion and rhythm, a la such ‘90s bands as Curve, while her vocal serves as a beacon leading us through the morass. It’s shadow and light set to song.

Lyrically, the song unreels the moment when the luster of love is beyond tarnished: “I feel the cord has finally broken/Tangled up in my fingers/I swallow all of my love/I don’t know where it’s gone.” Serrat’s delivery is noir-like to an extent, with the musical chaos swirling around placing her in the eye of the storm until near the end, when said tempest lays claim to her voice: “You erased my world/Piece after piece/You erased my soul.”

It’s quite intense and addictive, boding well for Big Wave.
