First Impressions: “Drive” by Maria Kelly

Irish singer-songwriter Maria Kelly returns to the world’s playlists with “Drive,” her first single since her 2021 album The Sum of the In-Between. It’s a reflective tune about reconnecting with people who once meant much to us.

It’s become somewhat common, I think, for folks to come together for a time only to part ways due to the ways of whims of modern life. We work and play together, become romantic with one another, only to leave one company for the next, even relocate city to city, and on and on. More often than not, said friendships and relationships don’t end with a bang; they drift into memory, with the whys of what happened never articulated.

Kelly explains, “I’ve always struggled with the fact that people who once meant so much to you can suddenly become a stranger again. I know that growing apart is natural, but I’ve never been able to move through that loss with ease—especially when so much is left unsaid at the end of it. ‘Drive’ is a yearning to go find them now, explain, and have them ease the guilt—and an attempt at accepting that it won’t ever happen.”
