The summers of my youth were a magical time filled with family, friends, fun and, when dark clouds cloaked the sky, bouts of boredom. Rainy days meant staying inside and being chastised by someone’s mom for roughhousing and/or being loud. We had no rivers, lakes or ponds in our suburban environs, just a crick home to botulism that once wiped out a hundred-plus fowl. We never baited hooks, in other words, just each other.
Such memories spring to mind when listening to “Catfish Summer,” the lead single from Down Home, the forthcoming album from Teddy and the Rough Riders (aka Ryan Jennings and Jack Quiggins). It’s a convivial cut that, and my tongue is in cheek here, promotes the polyamorous pairings of country, rock and the blues. Think Canned Heat—just, thankfully, no flute.
The group is currently pulling double duty as Emily Nenni‘s opening act and backing band, and has its own tour slated to start in October.
