First Impressions: “Fortune Favours” by Natalie Duncan

R&B singer-songstress Natalie Duncan first turned my head in 2012, when a rave review in a British music magazine led me to check out her debut album, Devil in Me. It’s a spellbinding set that I still return to every so often. And though her releases have been sporadic in the years since, they’re all worthwhile listens. Her 2020 album Free was one of my favorites of the year. Since, she’s released a string of sublime singles—both on her own and in collaboration with others. (Give a listen to “Swimming” by Baba Ganoush, for instance.)

“Fortune Favours” is her latest offering. As she said on her Instagram page, “If you like weird, moody, introspective, alt-soul jazzy vibes…I wrote ‘Fortune Favours’ for you.” The animated video is equally eccentric—and cool, too. It was created by Tanja Subotić and Tom Jantol, who created the avatar, and integrates photos and more from Natalie’s life.
