A snowstorm of suspect strength is scheduled to slice-and-dice our paradise tonight through early Saturday. The “wintry mix,” as the weather folks are calling the expected snow, sleet and freezing rain, is sure to cause slippery streets and, in turn, fender-benders galore. Even before the storm hits, however, I’m done with winter. We’re in the midst of a string of cold days and even colder nights; temps are 12 degrees below where they usually are this time of year.
Sara Bug’s third single in three weeks, “Take Me to Key West,” which embraces the Jimmy Buffett philosophy of sun, fun and love. It’s fanciful, breezy and sweet, and almost makes me forget the 20-degree nights we’ve been enduring. (Note I said almost.) It’s one of the highlights on her forthcoming sophomore set, Into the Blue, which will be released in full come Valentine’s Day.
Out of curiosity, I asked Ms. Bug for some background on the song. She noted that it’s one of her favorites on the new album and also shared:
I wrote TMTKW after my first ever trip down to the Keys. Key West reminds me of home in New Orleans. Small, charming, romantic, a place where the clock doesn’t really exist. When I got home, my view of life completely shifted. While the song is technically a love song, what I had really fallen in love with was the simple life. In coastal places like South Louisiana (where I was raised) and Florida, life moves slow. Enjoying the little things and being with your loved ones is all that really matters. It’s that “vacation” feeling, but it’s real life there. I think people from places like that have a strong, innate sense of the things that truly matter because deep down we know a storm could come and wash all the material things away in an instant. As long as everyone’s safe we’ll be ok because we’ll just rebuild together – most everyone from a place like that has experienced what I’m talking about to at least some extent. We don’t need fancy things or diamond rings and it doesn’t even matter where we are. As long as we have each other. My first trip to Key West re-awakened that part of me and I fell in love with the lifestyle all over again.
