It’s said that when a door closes, a window opens. It doesn’t always seem to be so at the time, of course, especially when said door represents the end of something we dreamt would last for the rest of our days, such as a relationship. The heart aches. The mind, too. Sometimes it’s just love running its course, akin to a river that splinters into streams, creeks and cricks, with each new tributary tinier than the last until, finally, it trickles to a stop. Other times, however, it’s due to a figurative dam built by the other person—infidelity, for example.
In Sara Bug’s latest single, “Start Over New,” she recounts how just such a logjam developed between her and a wandering ex, who used up one too many of the second chances she gave him: “And every time that you would get caught/I’d tell you ‘rollin’ stones don’t grow no moss’/And I’d dry my eyes, give you one more shot/Give you everything I have, give you everything I got/But it’s never enough and you always want more/I’m just never gonna be what you’re looking for.”
It’s a delicate dance, overcoming heartache, and Bug conveys it well within the confines of the song. It changes us—sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. In her case, with the help of her parents and faith, it sounds like the former, with the recognition that she deserves much more than she had coming into view by song’s end.
