First Impressions: “Starting to See” by Ben Turner

Wexford-based singer-songwriter Ben Turner shares a live rendition of “Starting to See,” the closing track on his recent album, A Breath of Life. In its original form, it’s an acoustic-based tune with sparse accompaniment, including piano and drums.

The press release quotes Turner as saying, “I have a handful of songs that have fallen into my lap, and this one showed up on a beautiful March morning at a friend’s kitchen table. The final version came a year later, and the only reason it took so long is because I tried too hard to make it something it wasn’t. What you hear on the record is much closer to how it came to me first. Sometimes you just have to submit!”

Stripped to its core in this performance from French’s Pub in Gorey, Ireland, it remains a gently hypnotic ode about the hope and optimism that comes with the first brush of summer.

FYI, although I’ve yet to spotlight it in these pages, the folky A Breath of Life is well worth a few listens. It’s available for purchase from Bandcamp and can be streamed everywhere. (I hope to get to it, as a Delayed Play, in the coming weeks.)
