A warm folk-rock feel underpins “One Heartbreak to Another,” the latest salvo from the London-based Birds Flying Backward, a six-piece band that’s made headway in the U.K. due to their well-received 2024 EP Surrender to the Void and following tour, which saw them opening for the Hanging Stars, a cool cosmic country-folk group, as well as such hip venues as the MOTH Club. Some may hear echoes of the Band in the song, others the Untitled-era Byrds, while a few will discern even more esoteric meters in the rhythms and melodies, ranging from Neil Young to the Coal Porters. Yet, the echoes are just that—echoes. It sports a comfortable vibe.
Singer-guitarist Joe Russell-Sanders, who wrote it, says, “I guess it’s a heartbreak song, which is a pretty well-worn subject matter but it is also one of the most universal and profound human experiences. It was a kind of reflection on love and my life, and how I relate to love in general.”
