The moody “June Gloom” is the latest dispatch from alt.-rock guitarist and songwriter Laura-Mary Carter, who’s perhaps best known as half of the UK-based Blood Red Shoes duo. In the press release, she equates the song to “a bittersweet weather report that captures the weird timing of sadness—how it shows up just when things start to feel okay.” She also says that “it’s equal parts funeral planning and cosmic shrug.”
Lee Kiernan of Idles handles the Technicolor-soaked guitar solo, which arcs across the red-tinted soundscape like a vibrant lightning strike.
The video, shot on VHS at the Tokyo karaoke room featured in Sofia Coppola’s classic Lost in Translation film, is equally compelling, capturing the late-night sadness that sometimes sweeps through the soul as if a low-pressure front or, worse, tropical depression.
In combination with “Elvis Widow,” which was released last month, “June Gloom” bodes well for Carter’s full-length debut, the forthcoming Bye Bye Jackie; that can be pre-ordered from—where else?—Bandcamp. (Of note, Carter also has a solo tour of the UK, Ireland and Europe slated to kick off in November; tickets go on sale August 8th via her website.)
