First, there’s Bella White’s voice, which floats from the speakers as if from long ago. It’s a wispy cirrus cloud one moment and cottony cumulus cloud the next, a verifiable quavery wonder. “There’s a distance between what I’ve done today and what I said I’d do,” she sings atop a shuffled beat, delving into the black hole of doubt, indecision, and self-recrimination. It’s an ode to existential angst and stasis, with her lyrics dwelling on the lies we tell ourselves and others “because it’s easier hiding what I could not deny.”
In addition to playing guitar and singing, she produced the song with help from Ross Farbe, who also strums guitar and adds subtle synthesizer flourishes; Sam Gelband handles the drums, percussion and backing vocals; Gina Leslie plays the bass and also chimes in on vocals, while Patrick M’Gonigle contributes fiddle.
To my ears, the song exudes a Neil Young vibe; anyone who enjoys his early ‘70s output will find much here to like.
