The gods dumped a few inches of snow on us yesterday. When we lived up north, it would’ve been classified as a nuisance storm. State and township plow trucks would be out in force, guaranteeing that the roads would be passable by noon. Here in the South, however, it’s sure to shut down everything for the next few days. The real issue isn’t the fluffy flakes, which I’ll soon shovel from our walk, but the bitter cold. The snow-covered secondary roads everyone uses will go unplowed, melt in the afternoon sun and then refreeze at the night.
I’d be remiss, however, not to single out the latest offering from Kamikaze (found for reasons unknown under “kmikzemusic” in Apple Music), a DIY duo from Cologne and Düsseldorf who make what they dub “soft riot pop.” Their songs sport the jangly new wave energy of the late 1970s and, too, early ‘90s alt.rock. The high-energy “X Me Out,” their latest release, attacks the yin-yang response many have when faced with micro-aggressions—confronting it or taking a deep breath, exhaling, and letting it go. Not every battle is worth the expenditure of energy, after all.
