The world still spins. That’s what I think, most days, when I wake. War and calamity, economic uncertainty, political insanity that puts the wants of a few before the needs of the many: When have they not pockmarked daily life? Sometime last century?
A few years back, Lillian Leadbetter’s State of Romance served as an anti-anxiety med in audio form for me. It still does. It’s a seductively soothing set, similar in that respect to Rumer’s Seasons of My Soul, teeming with luscious melodies, poetic lyrics, and vocals that mesmerize. When I click play, worries slip away.
“Untethered Alchemy,” a sip from her forthcoming album, works in similar fashion. It’s a hypnotic ode to rebirth, refocus, and the second chances we grant ourselves. On Instagram, she says it’s “deeply reflective of the spirit of spring, the budding of life and awakening.” It’s feathery soft yet hefty in thought, akin to whispers in a waking dream.
