Author: Jeff Gemmill

I am not old, but middle-aged; not grey, though too many hairs are fading that way; and not feline, but a decidedly flawed human. I’m a middle-aged white guy with catholic tastes, in other words, a product of my times but not a prisoner of them. (While I subscribe to the George Santayana aphorism that “those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it,” I also believe that those who only look in the rearview mirror are sure to drift into the median strip.) I launched this blog as occasional essays on the Hatboro-Horsham Patch in February 2012 and moved it to Wordpress.com in the summer of 2014, when it became a weekend endeavor. As the tag line indicates, it’s a mix of music reviews, reminisces and related ephemera. Years long ago, I wrote about TV for the black-and-white sections of the Cable Guide, Total TV, See and TV GUIDE magazines; I also oversaw the original Old Grey Cat website (1997-2006), primarily about Neil Young’s oeuvre, and co-founded a short-lived ‘zine, Da Boot, about collector CDs. I can be reached at oldgreycat [at] yahoo [dot] com.

I spotlight Citizen Kane Jr. Blues by #NeilYoung on my blog today. (Link, as always, in bio.) It’s an “official bootleg” of a long-ago show. The ambience of the Bottom Line, the famed—and now defunct—NYC club, bleeds into the proceedings in a way that makes the recording a true slice of audio verité. It's a spellbinding set. #NeilYoungArchives #NewRelease #OfficialBootleg
How news travelled back in the day… @jonathantakiff reports in the Philadelphia Daily News’ May 31st, 1974, edition on #NeilYoung’s May 15th Bottom Line gig. #citizenkanejrblues #neilyoungarchives
I write about the new #CarolineSpence album, True North, on my blog today. (Link in bio.) As #DeniseLevertov observed in “Talking to Grief,” it’s only when we let grief in, and name it, that we can move on. True North explores just that in an artful manner. Highly recommended.
I spotlight the new album from #ScottLloyd on my blog today. (Link in bio.) He's an articulate wordsmith with a pop sensibility who reminds me of artists as disparate as Jackson Browne and Paul McCartney, not to mention Oasis and Lucy Rose. It's an excellent album. Give it a go. #NewRelease #NewAlbum #singersongwriter
Here’s #PaulMcCartney and #StevieWonder on the cover of the #ClubSandwich, the McCartney/Wings magazine.
