First Impressions: The Desert by Kayla Von der Heide

Atmospheric Americana—that best describes the five songs that make up singer-songwriter Kayla Von der Heide’s latest EP. One can almost hear the sun’s rays shimmering across the haze of the Cochise County Desert, which she moved to a few years ago, and feeding mirages far off in the distance.

In a flip of the usual script, however, the same cloudless sky reveals a bountiful array of stars at night; their light strips away the pretenses of the day and enables truth to be discerned. Which is to say, Von der Heide delves into unrequited love, broken hearts, and the things that often go unspoken, and delivers her lyrics almost as if an apparition. It’s a rich, flavorful set, modern folk accented by the ghosts of old. Give it a go.
