New selfie. (Shaved off my beard.)

I subscribe to #AppleMusic, which lists the top artists, albums and songs users listened to in its year-end review. My stats are skewed for a few reasons - much of my #NeilYoung listening is via the #NeilYoungArchives and a lot more listening is via the Vox app. Still, it’s a good representation of my listening habits…

My wife shared this with me. So true!

Last night I watched the @thesongwritershowcase livestream here on Instagram, as one of my favorite young singer-songwriters, @calistagarcia.music, was taking part. Her new songs sounded great, as expected - her forthcoming album, out in February, should be excellent. So the big surprise for me was the other two artists, @belleshea and @jackieminton. This morning I listened to Minton’s 2021 Earnest Voice album - simply spellbinding. “Made of Memories” is a wondrous song. Belle Shea’s new single “Cheyenne” is phenomenal, too, as is her 2020 album, The Art of Years. Which is all to say, check out their songs and albums. All worth seeking out.

Ten years ago… #NeilYoung and #CrazyHorse at the Wells Fargo barn in South Philly. #PattiSmith opened and razed the roof off the arena, while Neil & the Horse elevated the building off the ground and into the stratosphere once they took the stage. November’s not even over and my blog (link in bio) has surpassed my totals from last year. (Some posts are seen by a few, others - anything about Neil Young - a lot.) I’m now thinking of my favorite albums of the year. Some, like the ones from Chris Canterbury, Kelsey Walden and Sophie & the Broken Things, connect with the gut even as they rock the intellect; others like How Good It Is by Jimetta Rose & Voices of Creation, salve the soul; and then there’s the Dream Syndicate’s Ultraviolet Battle Hymns & True Confessions and Horsegirl’s Versions of Modern Performance, both of which bridge spacetime like few others. Add in Zach Phillips’, Samara Joy’s and Neil Young’s archival Toast, and the many I’m forgetting, and… which will top my list, it’s too soon to say. But I can say, without equivocation, that it’s been a very good year for music. A great one, actually. #albumsoftheyear
